Like any good renegade, the East Village has been through its fair share of drama.
This is where Charlie Parker lived, the Beats landed, and the Hells Angels took up residence. It’s also where Patti Astor's Fun Gallery put Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat on the map.
Today's spaces run the way the neighborhood always has: artists decide what gets shown, galleries take chances on their own community, and nobody waits for permission.
The blocks between galleries reward wandering. Stop for some of the city’s best specialty coffee and art books, then carry both to one of the little gardens neighbors made from empty lots and watch the neighborhood go by.
