Art WalkLower East Side
Last updated Oct 19, 2026
Orchard Street used to be the place for practical stuff: underwear, fabric, leather jackets, luggage, bargain clothes. People came here to buy, sell, and make a living. They still do.
Walk Orchard, Ludlow, and Grand, and you'll find galleries tucked among vintage shops, cocktail bars, and businesses that have been here for generations. The galleries are a mixed bunch, with different tastes, ambitions, and ideas about what art should be.
The old S. Beckenstein fabric store is now Perrotin, a contemporary art gallery. The original painted sign remains. Yesterday's New York and today's, sharing an address. A few blocks away, the International Center of Photography offers a bigger stage for photography, just steps from the new Essex Market.
The rents change. The merchandise changes. The faces behind the counters change. But Orchard Street has never stood still. It doesn't even know how.
